What is the Skills in Demand visa Subclass 482?
Australia's employer-sponsored temporary work visa - officially the Skills in Demand (SID) visa, which replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) in December 2024. Three streams: Core Skills (CSOL occupation, min. $76,515/yr), Specialist Skills (min. $141,210/yr), and Labour Agreement. Core Skills grants up to four years; Specialist Skills up to five years.

Are you eligible for a Work Visa 482?
The 482 is employer-sponsored - both you and your employer must qualify. Understanding both sides means you can walk into that conversation with your employer knowing exactly what's involved.

Employee requirements:
- Eligible occupation. On the CSOL, or eligible under the Specialist Skills or Labour Agreement stream.
- 1 year work experience. Relevant, paid, within the last 5 years with relevant qualification.
- English proficiency. Approved English test (e.g. IELTS 5.0 in each band), or exemption applies.
- Salary at or above CSIT. $79,499 from 1 July 2026, or market rate, whichever is higher.
- Health and character. Standard Australian police and medical checks.

What your employer needs to provide:
- Approved Standard Business Sponsor. Must hold or apply for SBS status with DHA.
- Genuine position. The role must genuinely exist and not have been created solely to facilitate the sponsorship.
- Market salary rate. Must pay at least CSIT and the equivalent of an Australian worker in the same role and location.
- Clean sponsorship record. Prior non-compliance can affect eligibility.

What the 482 Skills in Demand visa gives you
- Work in Australia for up to 4 years. Live and work for your sponsoring employer in your nominated occupation. (Hong Kong passport holders: 5 years.)
- Bring your family. Partner and dependent children included - full work and study rights.
- Travel freely. Enter and leave Australia as many times as needed during the visa period.
- A clear path to permanent residency. After 2 years, your employer can nominate you for the Subclass 186. Matilda can manage the 186 process for you, too.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a 482 visa application take?
Indicative times for decision-ready applications: Sponsorship 4–6 weeks. Nomination 2–3 months. Visa 4–6 months (Core Skills stream). Matilda gives you a realistic timeline at first consult.
Can my family come with me on a 482 visa?
Yes. Partner and dependent children apply as secondary applicants. Same visa length. Full work and study rights in Australia.
What occupations are eligible for the 482 visa?
Core Skills stream occupations are on the CSOL, published by DHA. Specialist Skills covers roles earning at least $141,210/yr (rising to $146,717 from 1 July 2026). Matilda confirms occupation eligibility as part of the initial eligibility check.
Can the 482 visa lead to permanent residency?
Yes. The main pathway is the Subclass 186 via the Temporary Residence Transition stream. After 2 years with your sponsoring employer, they nominate you for PR. Matilda handles the 186 application.
What's the difference between the Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams?
Core Skills: occupation on CSOL, minimum $76,515/yr (rising to $79,499 from 1 July 2026). Specialist Skills: highly specialised role, minimum $141,210/yr ($146,717 from 1 July 2026). Most applications go through Core Skills. Matilda advises which stream applies at first consult.
What does my employer have to do?
Apply to become an approved Standard Business Sponsor, then nominate your specific role. They must pay at least CSIT and market rate, and the SAF levy. Matilda manages sponsorship and nomination documentation - your employer doesn't navigate DHA on their own.
