482 & 186 explained
If you’re an engineer looking at sponsorship in Australia, or an employer trying to fill an engineering role, Matilda Migration manages two employer-sponsored visa pathways for engineers: the 482 Skills in Demand visa (temporary, up to 4 years) and the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (permanent).
Engineers can start on a 482 and apply for the 186 after two years of sponsored work. Engineers with three or more years’ experience and a positive Engineers Australia skills assessment can go straight to the 186 through Direct Entry. Senior engineers on a salary of at least $146,576 can also be sponsored through the 482 Specialist Skills stream.
Do engineers need a skills assessment?
It depends on the visa pathway and your circumstances, not simply on being an engineer.
For the Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa, a skills assessment isn't generally required for engineers, although Home Affairs can ask for one for some occupations, applicants or individual cases. For the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream, a skills assessment isn't normally required, although Home Affairs can request one. The 186 Direct Entry stream always requires a positive skills assessment, which for engineers comes from Engineers Australia..
Matilda confirms whether a skills assessment is required for your particular visa pathway and circumstances as part of the eligibility assessment.
How the Engineers Australia assessment works
If your engineering qualification is accredited under a recognised international engineering agreement, such as the Washington Accord, you may be able to use the relevant accredited qualification pathway. If your qualification is not accredited, Engineers Australia generally assesses it through the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) pathway, where you demonstrate your engineering knowledge, skills and competency.
Engineers Australia conducts the assessment. Matilda can confirm whether you need one for your visa pathway and, if so, factor the assessment into your migration timeline.
State registration is a separate step
Visa eligibility and the right to provide certain professional engineering services are separate matters. Some states and territories require engineers to be registered before providing particular types of professional engineering services.
For example, Victoria requires registration for professional engineering services in five prescribed areas: civil, structural, electrical, mechanical and fire safety engineering. Other states and territories have their own registration or licensing requirements, which can depend on the type of engineering work and the industry involved.
Registration requirements are therefore assessed separately from the visa process. If registration is required for the work you will be doing, it needs to be addressed before you provide those services. Matilda can help identify whether registration may be required and plan it alongside your visa and employment timeline.

From temporary to permanent: the engineer PR pathway in Australia
The engineering occupations on this page are on the Core Skills Occupation List, which is used for the 482 Core Skills and 186 Direct Entry streams. This means eligible engineers can potentially take two pathways to permanent residency:
Already have 3+ years’ relevant experience and a positive Engineers Australia skills assessment? You may be eligible for 186 Direct Entry instead, without going through the 482 step. Matilda confirms which pathway fits at the free eligibility assessment, before any fees are quoted.
Does your business qualify to sponsor an engineer?
Any legally established and operating Australian business can apply to become a sponsor. There’s no minimum turnover or headcount requirement. What matters is that the position is genuine, the salary meets the Core Skills Income Threshold and the market rate for the role, and the occupation is eligible for the 482 Core Skills stream.
In some states, the engineer may also need registration before starting certain work, so it’s important to plan the start date around any registration requirements.
How Matilda handles your employer sponsorship from start to finish
Here's exactly what to expect when you work with Matilda to get your overseas employees an Australian work visa.
You can also alternate between your view and what your employee will experience with us:
1. You'd like to sponsor an overseas candidate to work in your business
Your top candidate needs a visa with work rights in Australia - and the sooner you start the employer sponsorship process, the sooner they can start.
2. Understand which employer-sponsored visa is the right fit for your business
We will guide you on which employer-sponsored visa pathway is the right fit for you and the candidate, making it easier to plan staffing levels, budget, and processing timelines.
3. Ensure that you have the right to Sponsor them
Where necessary, we will help you obtain Government approval to become an approved employer sponsor - including preparing your Standard Business Sponsorship application. Where possible, we'll also help you achieve Accredited Sponsor status, which gives your applications priority processing and makes the process quicker every time you hire from overseas.
4. Check the candidate's eligibility for an employer-sponsored visa
We will assess your candidate's experience and skills to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements, and provide guidance on the minimum qualifications, work experience and English language ability needed for each position you wish to nominate under your sponsorship.
5. We’ll build the Standard Business Sponsorship, Nomination and Visa applications for you
We'll create the Sponsorship, Nomination and Visa applications so they meet the Department of Home Affairs requirements for employer sponsorship. We'll also do the hard work for you - including the Genuine Position Statement, Labour Market Testing, Skills Assessment and Police Checks.
6. Final review and lodgement
Our Registered Migration Agent will complete the final review before lodgement, submit your employer sponsorship applications, and liaise directly with the Department of Home Affairs until the grant of the visa.
7. Receive post-lodgement support and compliance guidance
We will work with the Department of Home Affairs to respond immediately to any requests for further information, and work with you to ensure your business remains compliant with all approved sponsor obligations - so you avoid any issues with departmental monitoring or audits.

Frequently asked questions
Can an engineer get permanent residency in Australia through employer sponsorship?
Yes, through the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme. Engineers on a 482 can generally apply through the Temporary Residence Transition stream after at least two years of eligible sponsored employment. Engineers with at least three years’ relevant experience and a positive Engineers Australia skills assessment may be eligible for Direct Entry instead, without holding a 482 first.
Do engineers need an Engineers Australia skills assessment for employer sponsorship?
For engineers, a skills assessment is required for 186 Direct Entry, but not normally for 482 or 186 Temporary Residence Transition. Home Affairs can still request an assessment in individual cases. Where required for an engineer, the relevant assessing authority is Engineers Australia.
Do engineers need state registration before applying for the visa?
Not usually. Registration is separate from the visa and is required for certain engineering work in some states, including Queensland, Victoria and the ACT. You don't need it to lodge your application, but the Department may ask to see it before it makes a decision on your visa. Where registration is mandatory for your role, it's worth starting early so it's in place before the Department asks and before you start that work. Matilda plans it into your visa timeline.
What English score does an engineer need for the visa?
For the 482, the standard IELTS requirement is 5.0 in each component, or an equivalent test. For the 186, the standard requirement is Competent English, equivalent to IELTS 6.0 in each component. Some applicants are exempt, including certain passport holders.
What is the minimum salary to sponsor an engineer?
For nominations lodged from 1 July 2026, the Core Skills Income Threshold is AUD $79,423. The salary must also meet the annual market salary rate for the role, whichever requirement is higher. The 482 Specialist Skills stream has a threshold of AUD $146,576.
How long does engineer visa sponsorship take?
The timeline depends on the business, nomination and visa application. Where labour market testing applies, the position generally needs to be advertised for at least four weeks before the nomination is lodged. Home Affairs processing times vary and should be checked using its current processing time guide.
